One of the most popular crossbows on the market currently is the Excalibur Axiom SMF, and there is good reason for this as the Axiom is simple, efficient, and effective and it delivers all of these things better than many crossbows that are priced far higher than it. Like its cousin, the Excalibur Ibex SMF the Axiom is well known as a “price point” crossbow which means that for its price it is very competitive. Excalibur seems to have taken the Axiom SMF a step further however as it can compete with all but the absolute best crossbows around and is accessible to anyone from the absolute novice to the seasoned expert. While there is little doubt that the Excalibur Axiom SMF is an excellent value some shoppers will understandably be nervous about its price so in this crossbow review I will give you all the information you need to decide if the Axiom is right for you.
Draw Weight: 175 lbs
Power Stroke: 14.5 inches
Mass Weight: 5.8 lbs
Overall Length: 37.5 in
Arrow Length: 20 inches
Recurve – The Excalibur Axiom uses the classic recurve style of crossbow, this type of crossbow carries advantages and disadvantages versus the more common compound style, however Excalibur has done an excellent job minimizing the negatives and accentuating the positives, the Excalibur is quite easy to cock compared to compound crossbow of similar draw weight and there are a lot less components to worry about. The Axiom also does not sacrifice much on power either being capable of generating quite a bit of energy and utilizing it efficiently.
Excalibur Axiom SMF Assembly
Another advantage of using a recurve design for the Axiom SMF is that it simplifies the assembly process greatly allowing the crossbow to be put together with minimal tools and expertise, and for anyone who needs additional help Excalibur includes an instructional DVD and manual. Assembly time should be under 20 minutes.
Excalibur Axiom SMF Features
SMF (Synthetic Main frame) Technology – This technology is the key to the Axiom’s price point status, it replaces the Excalibur standard aluminum frame system with one made of a reinforced polymer, this greatly reduces weight allowing the Axiom to achieve its very light 6 pounds, as well as significantly reducing cost, but still retaining most of the strength and durability Excalibur users have come to expect.
Multiplex Scope – This high quality scope is a perfect add-on for the Excalibur Axiom, it is easy to use and very effective. Most customers even those inexperienced with adjusting scopes are able to sight the scope in to arrow splitting accuracy with only a few shots, and there is a decent chance the scope will come out of the package zeroed. All mounting hardware is included.
Dynaflight String – An optional but highly recommended upgrade to the Axiom, this is a custom Flemish made string that is very energy efficient and significantly reduces the volume of the Axiom which is basically its only downside.
Rope cocking aid – A standard Excalibur crossbow cocking aid that greatly reduces the amount of force needed to load the Axiom and considering that it is already a relatively easy crossbow to cock use of this attachment will result in a very low time between shots.
4 Arrow Quiver – Standard four arrow quiver which attaches to the right side of the Axiom near the front. It is made of a high quality and durable polymer.
Four Firebolt Arrows – All Excalibur Axiom packages will include four Firebolt arrows with field points attached. While these are indeed quality arrows they are more suited for target practice and zeroing your scope than hunting though you could certainly get away with a couple of trips with them. One way or another they add great value to the Axiom package.
Excalibur Axiom SMF Performance Overview
A crossbow’s true value is found in its performance, no matter how much technology a company packs into a crossbow if it can’t put arrows down range quickly and accurately it isn’t worth much, when it comes to the Axiom you get what you pay for and more this crossbow provides everything you need in a crossbow right out of the box, whether your purpose is recreational shooting, target shooting, or hunting big game the Axiom can get it done. It is capable of producing arrow speeds exceeding 305 FPS which isn’t the highest but coupled with the Axiom’s pin point accuracy and fast load times you shouldn’t notice a difference versus higher end crossbows.
Speaking on the accuracy, Excalibur certainly did not spare their secret sauce on the Axiom as it puts out consistent bullseye shots out to 60 yards and beyond, in fact, should you purchase the Axiom make sure not to aim in the same spot twice as there is a very high chance of you splitting an arrow and destroying it.
Overall the Excalibur Axiom SMF is a fantastic crossbow that has very few weaknesses and many strengths, and I highly recommend it if it fits within your budget capabilities.
Pros & Cons
Performance – The Axiom is capable of performance approaching the most advanced crossbows around, and is certainly at the top of its price range.
Value – While its mid-range price tag may still put it out of reach for some, there is no doubt that the Axiom is an excellent buy for those that can afford it.
Sounds – The one downside to the Axiom is that it lacks a built in suppression system and as a result can be a bit loud, the range of the Axiom circumvents this for the most part, however many hunters will probably want to add a quieting device such the Excalibur S5 String Suppression System for optimal performance.
